You blocked what???

Here in the UAE the local internet provider Etisalat outsources a company in Seattle, Washington to monitor all internet users to protect them from certain content that may be deemed unacceptable to viewers in a Muslim nation.

Ironically one of my dearests students Ameera, a Muslim woman from the neighboring nation of Bahrain, which shares a very similar Islamic law to the UAE, is working for a company in Seattle, Washington under the Salaam Program. While viewing her weblog and chatting with her on MSN I decided to ask her why I couldn't view her photos. She told me they were fine and showed up for her. After clicking on them I realized that the more specific website containing only the single picture link read like this...

"We apologize the site you are attempting to visit has been blocked due to its content being inconsistent with the religious, cultural, political and moral values of the United Arab Emirates."

Keeping in mind that Ameera is not going to put up anything of that nature on her weblog, that her pictures are most probably more safe to view than 99% of the other wesites I can view, I ask you where is the fine line between censorship for the sake of protecting a Muslim nation from seeing something against their beliefs, which I have no objection to, and blocking off something that a muslim woman put up on her personal weblog from the US?

Not sure if this has any relevance, but I am also forbidden to use a voice over internet phone or the website www.skype.com. Makes one wonder, are they just going too far in the name of a monopoly and power/control or are there really just some sites that got caught up in the mix of being blocked on accident?

By the way, her weblog address is http://ameeraworld.blogspot.com/. If you are using Etisalat's services, enjoy the words :). If you are anywhere else in the world, enjoy all the photos that I still can't see :(.

    Mr. Hensel,

It surely is weird not to be able to see those pictures cause i too was wondering about it... so now you made it clear why things are this way...

As to the censorship, well, look at it this way.. Etisalat is trying supposedly to lock all those bad sites and with them come some religious sites too:P and here in the country all what is being locked on the internet is on the SCREEN OF THE CINEMA.. what a coincidence... isn't it? hehehehhe

Well i can't say much about it cause maybe Etisalat is tryin to lock bad sites and mistakengly got some good ones .. but hmm if i understood you clearly mr hensel, Etisalat is usin another company to do that?!! if that is true, then how can they ask others to do a job that they aint aware of which to block and which not to?

Well, dats like a movie where you go : ha ha ha .. funny huh?

    Smile

    Hey Eric,

once you are next time in our lovely office in Knowledge Village make sure that you have 5 extra minutes to view Ameera's lovely pictures.

s!lent.sp!r!t any idea why you can view any available site in this world view in the freezones?

Etisalat pretty much is using their monopoly to control what can and can't be shown in the Dubai (except free zones). The reasons are either religious/moral (pornography, gambling, etc.) and also commercial (voice over internet phones, skype, etc.).

In the "free zones" the internet provider is not Etisalat. They use something else (can't recall the name right now, think it is Sahr or something), but that service doesn't block anything (could be because they are in a free zone or don't have the same Islamic law constraints that Etisalat does). Emaar properties are also free of any blocking.

Now I want to ask anyone in Dubai, free zone or otherwise, does your MSN/Skype still work? No one at my house or that I know have been able to use them starting yesterday and I am starting to think that Etisalat is also blocking that!

Now that Etisalat has hired spies to watch my weblog (I wish I was that important to them...hehe), is there any chance that I won't be tracked down and killed using a proxy?
